Frequently Asked Questions

what is DTF?

DTF stands for Direct-to-Film printing. It is a textile printing method where a design is first printed onto a special film and then transferred to a garment or other fabric using a heat press.

What does the print feel like on the shirt? Is it soft?

  • The Feel: DTF prints have a smooth, slightly rubbery texture. It's often compared to a screen-printed transfer or a soft plastic decal. It is not as soft or "no-feel" as Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing, where the ink soaks into the fabric.

  • Why it feels that way: The adhesive powder that bonds the print to the fabric creates a thin, durable layer on top of the garment. While it may feel a bit stiff at first, it often softens up after the first few washes.

  • Customer Preference: Some customers prefer the soft feel of DTG, especially on fine, lightweight fabrics like cotton. Others value the bold, opaque look of DTF and find the slight texture to be a sign of a high-quality, durable print.

How durable is a DTF print? Will it crack or fade after a few washes?

  • Durability: DTF is known for its excellent durability. The prints are highly resistant to cracking, peeling, and fading, even after many washes. The elasticity of the print allows it to stretch with the fabric without breaking.

  • Longevity: With proper care (washing inside-out in cold water, avoiding harsh detergents and high heat in the dryer), a high-quality DTF print can last for 50-100 washes or more. This is often as good as, or even better than, other popular methods like DTG or vinyl.

  • The "Why": The hot-melt adhesive powder creates a strong, flexible bond between the ink and the fabric, which is the key to its resilience.

What types of fabrics and colors does DTF work on?

  • Versatility: DTF is not limited to a specific fabric type. It can be successfully applied to virtually any material, including:

    • 100% cotton

    • Polyester

    • Nylon

    • Denim

    • Leather

    • Cotton/poly blends

  • Color Compatibility: DTF prints are equally vibrant on both light and dark-colored garments. This is because a layer of white ink is printed as a base under the colors, ensuring the design is opaque and the colors "pop" regardless of the background color. This is a significant advantage over other methods that might be limited to white or light fabrics.
